On my recent mindfulness teacher training course, we spent a considerable amount of time in silence. Not just during the meditations, but also from the moment we went to sleep, to after early morning practice and breakfast had finished at 9am. We also spent a whole day in silence. Yes we could swim or sunbathe or do yoga or lie under an avocado tree.... but no reading, emailing, internet - or talking. Just Being.Silence helps our brains recover as this article explains. And cultivating silence in your life isn't that difficult. Turning off the smart phone and TV an hour before bed. Not switching it on again until after breakfast. Practising speaking less when with friends and family - always tricky! Not reaching for your phone or a book when waiting in line, or on the train or bus. Just sitting and looking around, breathing.
